Yourself...

The role of Caregiver is challenging. Taking care of yourself is the first step toward meeting the challenge. The following suggestions are made in an effort to provide Caregivers the support they need:

Ask for help. Family members and friends may be willing to assist you but may not offer to do so. They may be waiting for you to ask. There are community resources also available. First start with a list of tasks that you need help with. Think of the persons and community resources which might be of assistance and list the names with the tasks. Then ask for help.

Maintain your social contacts by keeping in touch and engaging in social activities with friends on a regular basis. Respite care may be provided by family members, friends and community resources.

Schedule and visit your physician for all recommended annual examinations. Take medications as prescribed and follow your physician’s orders.

Eat a balanced diet and avoid unhealthy foods and drinks.

Sleep and rest are important. Schedule rest breaks for yourself during the day and be sure to get eight hours of sleep each night.

Exercise is very important. Arrange your daily schedule to allow for physical activities at least three times each week. Three thirty minutes walks each week will be a good starting point.

Consider having family meetings on a regular basis where you keep everyone informed and involved in the care of your loved one.

We are here to help.
