Telephone counseling, information and support

Among the difficulties caregivers face, some of the most common are increased isolation, not knowing who to call, and lack of time. When questions and concern arise, knowing that there is someone you can contact becomes very important. The roles of caregiver are many and demanding. Finding help by making a telephone call can be a tremendous service. Listed below are services offered by the Alzheimer Family Program staff. For assistance call (205) 934-2178.

Counseling

The staff of AFP can help caregivers plan strategies to use when dealing with problem behaviors caused by Alzheimer’s Disease. Although there is no guarantee that a particular approach will work in every case, both research and experience have shown that there are skills caregivers can learn and tips they can use to help. After hearing the caller’s particular story, the staff provides information and suggestions needed to deal with the problems.

Listening is key. Caregivers often become cut off from friends, support networks and even some family members. Caregivers need someone to talk to who understands their situation. Simply being heard can help lighten the burden.

Information

There is a great deal of information available to caregivers. Accurate information is vital. The Alzheimer’s Family Program Staff can assist in several ways. They share information with caregivers via the telephone and correct myths regarding dementia, such as the belief that it is a normal part of aging. They send written information and can do the ‘leg work’ for caregivers by searching the internet and other sources for additional information.

Support

Caregivers often feel that they cannot talk to others about their day-to-day struggles because others would not understand.

There are occasions when people do shy away from those dealing with dementia because their lack of understanding makes them feel uncomfortable.

Caregivers sometimes feel embarrassed over their loved one’s behavior.

Being able to talk to someone who truly understands and can communicate empathy can be very supportive for caregivers.

Call the Alzheimer Family staff at (205) 934-2178. If the staff is away from the office, leave a message. Your call will be returned on the following work day. Indicate if there is a particular time of day or day of the week that would be best to return your call.
