The following are several suggestions to consider when faced with the difficult aspects of caring for an individual with Alzheimer’s Disease.
First you must understand the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Establish a relationship with the individual’s physician that leads to open communication. As Caregiver you should feel comfortable asking questions and providing information regarding the individual’s condition.
Contact community organizations for assistance and become active in a Caregiver Support Group.
Having a plan for getting through the day can help Caregivers cope. A schedule of activities will make life easier for the caregiver and the individual with dementia. A set schedule should include a designated time for going to bed, walking, eating, personal hygiene and a time for socializing.
Keep in mind the individual’s likes and dislikes as you plan activities and tasks.
Plan the most difficult tasks for the individual’s best time of day.
Allow enough time to complete each activity scheduled. Avoid rushing when possible. Rushing can add to depression, confusion and anxiety.
Create and maintain a calm environment by limiting loud noises in the home.
Be flexible and ready to change your schedule if need be. The individual’s mental abilities can change rapidly from hour to hour.
Offer plenty of reassurance and praise. Say to the individual; “Thank you,” “I love you,” and “You did a good job.” These statements may reduce anxiety and help the individual feel at ease.
If the individual is responsive, show affection by touching, holding hands and giving hugs as you go through the day.
Remember as a Caregiver you will need help and it is ok to ask for help.
